With over 20 years of experience in the restaurant and food service industry, Neal brings professional expertise and competition-winning techniques to home cooks everywhere through Pellets and Pits.
A self-proclaimed grilling aficionado, Neal has been cooking on charcoal grills, pellet grills, and smokers for over 30 years, since his Dad first taught him on a standard Weber kettle grill.

From Granny’s Kitchen to Competition Champion
Neal’s culinary journey began at age 8, learning to cook beans and greens with his Granny when he could first reach the stove. That early passion led to a fine dining restaurant internship at 16, where he discovered his love for creating bold, flavorful dishes.
Professional Experience
After high school, Neal joined the US Navy, where he managed a kitchen staff of 30 with the responsibility of feeding 3,000 sailors three meals a day. His talent quickly earned him promotions through the ranks, eventually becoming an Officer’s Chef and visiting Camp David in his culinary pursuits.
Following his Naval service, Neal held the position of Executive Chef at a fine dining steakhouse, where he mastered the art of grilling and perfected his techniques with premium cuts and high-heat cooking. During his time as a steakhouse chef, he expertly grilled thousands of steaks, developed recipes for sauces and side dishes, and oversaw the kitchen dinner service.
Competition BBQ Success
Neal has competed alone and as an integral part of larger BBQ teams in numerous competitions, testing his skills against seasoned pitmasters. His crowning achievement came when he took first place in a wing competition with his dessert-inspired smoked fried chicken wings—a recipe that combines the best of both smoking and frying techniques.
Home in Tennessee
Now back in Tennessee, Neal loves the laid-back feel of his own kitchen. Though he’s technically a “home cook” these days, his two decades of professional experience and competition success make him the best darn home cook you’ll ever meet.
At Pellets and Pits, Neal shares his restaurant secrets, culinary techniques, and years of grilling wisdom to help you create extraordinary dishes right in your own backyard. Whether you’re a grilling newbie or an experienced pitmaster, Neal’s easy-to-follow instructions and professional insights will help you up your game and produce restaurant-quality food at home.
